Daily Denny: Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki in the news
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

83 Covid 19 victims in the prefecture, fear of widespread return, governor again requests self restraint for those entering prefecture
On 14 July, the Prefecture reported 83 new Covid 19 cases and 5 deaths in the prefecture. The number of new victims greatly increased from 58 on the same day the week before. The strongly contagious Delta strain victims are tending to increase in the province.
Governor Denny Tamaki hurriedly called a press conference at the Prefectural Office. He pointed out, “There was a tendency toward a decrease in victims, but the worry is a rebound, a return of widespread infection.” In spite of thorough contagion prevention measures in the prefectural population, caution is requested for those entering the province from outside.
On 15 July, Governor Tamaki will go up to Tokyo for a face-face meeting with Taro Kouno, the minister in charge of vaccines. He will request that vaccines be secured according to plan.
The prefecture is working on improvements to the medical provision system while looking forward to the lifting of the state of emergency declaration, but Governor Tamaki emphasized, “If the contagion suddenly becomes widespread, lifting the state of emergency declaration measures will become difficult.” He requested, “I strongly ask special caution in travel, especially from areas with widespread infection.”
On The other hand, concerning the travel industry’s work in welcoming travelers who have completed examinations and vaccine shots, the governor clarified, “I’m delighted they’re working on it and it helps.”
The opinion has also arisen at a meeting of experts that the entry of people already vaccinated should be accepted. A question arose from the press corps over whether it was appropriate to appeal to tourists to come at this point now while there was the possibility of a large virus rebound occurring in the prefecture.
Governor Tamaki elaborated, “Now is the time to work together to arouse the people to defeat this widespread contagion.”
Among men and women aged 80 to 90 living on Okinawa, a total of 211 have died of the virus. In the past week, the new rate of infection in the prefecture has been 22.96 per 100,000, third in the nation following Tokyo at 39.61, and Kanagawa at 24.2.
The American Military has acknowledged 11 people infected.
