Denny in the News: 23 July 2021
With Okinawa’s newly infected 2.4 times higher, Governor Tamaki:“I can only say that the fifth wave is upon us!”
Okinawa Prefecture, where the State of Emergency Declaration against Covid 19 has been promulgated, confirmed on 20 July that 154 people had been newly infected. That is 2.4 times as many as the same day last week. The last time with over 100 infections confirmed was 16 June. Centered in the younger generation, the contagion is again becoming widespread.
In a special press conference, Governor Denny Tamaki commented, “I can only say that the fifth wave is upon us!” He once again called on people dining out together or entering the Prefecture to use prudence.
According to the Prefecture, at one point in the fourth wave, the number of newly infected people surpassed 300. Since the last half of June, there were days with infections in the twenties, but shifted toward an increase since 13 July, when for 8 consecutive days, the toll surpassed that of the same day the previous week. Among the 154 people announced on 20 July, about 70 percent were aged between 20 and 50.
As for the reason for the shift toward increase, the Prefecture explained, “Just as the Declaration was prolonged, in restaurants and bars where the contagion was going down, it began to increase.” The Prefecture claimed that, in the wake of the contagion that passed through restaurants and bars, the virus was brought into homes and workplaces.
Since 12 July, the positive rate for the Delta (Indian) strain in one week hit 16.6%, 4 times the previous week’s rate, moving to replace the original strain. In Okinawa Prefecture, the number of infected people rose after the long continuous holidays in May, and on 23 May the State of Emergency Declaration was promulgated. The first extension was expected to last until 11 July, but as the stringency of the medical system and so on continued, the Declaration was again extended until 22 August.
At the moment, the Prefecture is considering carrying out a request that dining establishments that offer alcohol be closed and the contagion situation be controlled, among new countermeasures.

Translator’s Notes
Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be of great help.
