Governor Tamaki wants conservation measures to reinforce World Heritage Sites in Okinawa and Amami so that “they will still be here a thousand year from now!”
Governor Tamaki and others held a viewing party at the Prefectural Office on 26 July to see the very moment when Okinawa and Amami were officially registered as World Natural Heritage Sites and took in the results.
Appearing overjoyed and applauding, Governor Tamaki said, “That’s it. It’s done!”, as the monitor connected to YouTube showed that the registration had been decided. He emphasized that after the registration as a natural heritage, because he is requesting the preservation of endemic species and tourism management, “This valuable natural heritage will remain for a hundred, no a thousand years.” He added that he was going to consider reinforcing environmental conservation.
Besides the three villages of Kunigami and Taketomi District, the viewing party connected the Environmental Ministry, Kagoshima Prefectural Office and others online. Kagoshima Prefecture Governor Koichi Shiota offered, “I would request that the mutual cooperation between Okinawa and Kagoshima Prefectures flourish more and more taking advantage of the Natural Heritage registration. Governor Tamaki, his eyes glued to the monitor, joyously agreed with a big nod.
At a press conference held after the suspenseful party, Governor Tamaki continued to explain procedures to counter road accidents involving endemic and outside species. He emphasized, “In order to preserve this natural environment to be handed down to our future, I want to work to align creating a suitable sustainable community in every locality with our World Natural Heritage.”
As to the question of hazardous materials found at the northern American Military training sites due for return to Okinawa, he noted, “The National Government bears responsibility to cooperate with the American Military and I am requesting that an investigation and the removal of the hazardous materials be quickly carried out. What I want is for the American Military to conserve the environment and to cooperate in Okinawa Prefecture’s task of protecting it.”

Translator’s Notes
Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be of great help.
