Governor Denny Tamaki promotes investigation of measures for construction workers at high risk of contagion and promotion of vaccination.
At a press conference on 26 July at the Prefectural Office, Okinawa Prefecture Governor Denny Tamaki clearly laid out his thoughts on proceeding with an investigation of prevention measures against the widespread contagion targeting construction workers who are at high risk of contagion from Covid-19.
Cooperating with the construction companies concerned, moreover taking into account the actual situation, the governor is investigating how to proceed with vaccinations for construction personnel as essential workers. The governor said, “It’s obvious at a glance. The pattern of widespread contagion in Okinawa is the same as after the 5 consecutive day holiday in May.” So, he has ordered specialized contagion countermeasures variously where contagion is especially high: 1. the restaurant business, 2. the construction industry, 3. children and students, 4. medical and long-term care workers.
He explained, “When you look at industry types, contagion is high in the restaurant industry followed by the construction industry, but there’s a worry that it will spread in the construction industry. We have to ask them to take rather thorough measures against contagion since they often have to go to the outer islands in their work and, with their outdoor lifestyle, wearing a mask is difficult when they have to contend with heat exhaustion.” Concrete measures will be determined in consultation with the concerned groups.
As for the incredibly low vaccination rate in Japan’s 47 local governments, the governor explained his awareness: “They say that recording vaccinated people without a vaccination ticket from their city, district, or town is delaying things, but it’s getting done in the present case of Okinawa. Really, it’s not what you’d call a low vaccination rate, but a public announcement time lag.” He further explained that he is asking the National Government to strictly guarantee the necessary vaccine supply.
On 26 July, 116 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in the prefecture. That is 3.3 times more than the 35 victims on the previous Monday (19 July). Following Tokyo’s 72.83 positive Covid-19 cases per hundred thousand in the recent week, Okinawa’s rate of 63.00 is high.

Translator’s Notes
Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be of great help.
