Denny in the News: 29 July 2021
The Delta strain, a 56% positive infection rate, the possibility of an unprecedented spread of Covid-19 in the prefecture.
On 28 July, the Prefecture announced that 95 people were newly confirmed as testing positive for Covid-19, including suspected cases of the Delta strain. Out of 169 tests, the positive rate for Delta was 56.2%.That is an increase of 20 points over last week’s rate of 33% and Delta is rapidly advancing to replace the original Covid-19 .
By region, the central district had 59 cases, the southern district 21, the northern district 1, and Miyako 2. Additionally, in screening at Naha Airport 7 people, in PCR screening at restaurants 2, and at PCR screening for those who requested it 3 cases were confirmed. No screening has been carried out at Yaeyama. In the prefecture, cumulatively, 220 victims of the Delta strain have been confirmed including suspected cases.
On its website on 28 July, the Prefecture announced that it was newly issuing an order requesting shutdown or shortened hours at 7 shops. Since 6 July, this was the first such order. In the recent week, the infection rate per 100,000 people was 82.26, nationally the second worst, vying with Tokyo’s worst of 88.31.
Governor Denny Tamaki made his analysis of the present situation clear, noting that the contagion was spread, not during the 4 day consecutive holidays between 22 and 25 July, but during the week of 12 July after the extension of the state of emergency declaration. He said cases were obvious where the activities of lively 20 to 40 somethings got infected at parties and spread the contagion at home and at work. The effective reproduction rate is 2.07 people, meaning how many people one person can spread the virus to.
Governor Tamaki predicted that if the present situation remains unchanged, “It’s going to lead to a never before experience spread.” Right now the Prefecture is requesting a guarantee of medical facilities and hospital beds. Unused hospital waiting stations will be reactivated. As a new approach, in Okinawa Island’s central district, the Prefecture will put together a gateway facility for PCR screening. Moreover, to make progress on preparations to open a new residential medical facility, the Prefecture is asking the National Government to send nurses.
Uruma announced that at its medical institutions it added 52 new positive cases in a newly confirmed cluster of contagion, making for a total 107. That is the biggest cluster so far in the Prefecture.
The Prefecture announced that on the same day there were 5 people who tested positive among the US Military in Okinawa. That is a total of 1620 victims. They are not included in prefectural totals.

Translator’s Notes
Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be of great help.
