The cooperation agreement was concluded on 19 August among 7 partners including the Prefecture and Ryukyu University on conservation management for World Natural Heritage sites in the north of Okinawa Island and Iriomote Island. The agreement plans long term survey research and human resource development of those who will carry out the conservation management.
The conclusion ceremony was done online. Governor Denny Tamaki noted, “We’re going to put together a budget to advance our agenda.” Others involved in concluding the agreement are: Okinawa University Graduate School of Science and Technology, Biodiversity Section of the National Institute of Environmental Studies, Kyushu Branch of the Forestry Research Institute, Okinawa Forestry Management Office of the Kyushu Forestry Management Bureau of the Forestry Ministry, and the Okinawa-Amami Natural Environment Office of the Environmental Ministry. Each organization has long pursued research in nature and culture, and from now on, they will also set themselves to maintaining our heritage by accumulating scientific findings.
As for the designated areas, they will work on monitoring to report to UNESCO. Concerning the human resource development of those to carry this burden, Ryukyu University President Mutsumi Nishida noted, “We have extensive research at our school focusing on nature, culture, tourism and World Heritage. I want to send out our students who have taken advantage of this agreement to carry it out.”
Director of the National Environmental Research Section Hiroya Yamano and Director of the Kyushu Branch of Forestry Research Shinichiro Tomura expressed their enthusiasm for the agreement, “We want to educate the young as researchers.”

Translator’s Notes
Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be of great help.
