Denny in the News: 29 August 2021, Denny gets Covid Shot

Vaccinations halted at Okinawa’s huge center because of foreign substances found in additional lots of Moderna vaccine

Okinawa Prefecture announced on 28 August that vaccinations were suddenly halted at a huge vaccination center located in Naha’s Prefectural Budokan (martial arts center) after finding foreign substances in American Moderna Covid-19 vials and filled syringes before vaccinations.

Vaccinations at the Budokan site on 29 August have been cancelled. 4 instances of foreign substances have been found. According to the Prefecture, it had received notification from the Health Ministry on vaccine lot numbers whose use should be put on hold, but the lot numbers do not match those in question.

Also, according to the Prefecture, at about 3 in the afternoon on 28 August as the vaccinations were starting, a  one milligram speck of foreign matter was discovered in a vaccine-filled syringe. After disposing of that syringe, the vaccinations continued. But, around 4:30 or 5 in the afternoon, a pharmacist visually spotted the same kind of foreign substance in a vial. At 6:20 that afternoon,  it was decided to suspend vaccinations. In examining the remaining syringes, some syringes with black and some with pink foreign material were found.

The Prefecture is confirming, among other concerns, the safety of the vaccine with the Health Ministry and Moderna. About 1600 people with vaccine reservations on 28 and 29 August were affected. The  Prefectural Health and Medical Department chief, Reiko Oshiro said, “It was a difficult judgement, but we canceled the vaccinations considering the importance of our concerns.

Governor Denny Tamaki got his vaccination at the Budokan site about 4:55 in the afternoon on 28 August.

Translator’s Notes

  1. Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  1. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be of great help.
