City’s Senkaku landing petition ignored by the Prefecture, peaceful diplomacy requested (28se21)

The city of Ishigaki petitioned the national government to go ashore in order to set up a monument, after receiving a name change for the Senkaku Island Chain. (Trans. note: It became part of Tonoshiro in Ishigaki.) On 27 September, an Ishigaki city district candidate for election, Prefectural Assembly member Ichiro Ohama (LDP), requested during the Prefectural Assembly general question time, "The Prefecture  ought to get in step with the city to ask the national government for a landing.” The Prefecture however offered no response.

Since Governor Denny Tamaki did not rise to respond, Masaru Kinjo, the governor’s office director, paused to state, “As for the Senkaku problem, we would strongly like to request that by following  the path of peaceful diplomatic dialog a solution can be devised.”

Assembly member Ohama stated, “The governor and the city together ought to go ashore to set up a monument and inspect the Senkaku Island Chain. According to Ohama, Chinese media portrayed the Ishigaki City request to go ashore to put up a monument as a “provocative farce.”   Ohama claimed he was requesting to survey the prefecture, so, “It’s no big deal!”

Kinjo, the governor’s office director, noted, “No territorial dispute exists with China.” KInjo, whose support was requested for a Senkaku Information Center that the city of Ishigaki is establishing, answered, “Touching on the city’s ideas, we’ll consider whether there’s anything we can do.”

The Maritime Bureau is in charge of Chinese transportation and shipping administration. It tracks foreign ships that impinge on Chinese territorial waters. Since 1 September 2021, it has put in force a revised maritime transportation safety law that gives them the right to force foreign ships to leave its waters. That said, he noted, “Ships of the Maritime Bureau have not been recognized in the seas of the Senkaku Chain. As of now, nothing has changed.”

Translator’s note:

Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  2. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be of great help.
