Due to Covid-19, Governor Tamaki urges people to reflect before coming to the prefecture , “at this critical moment just before lifting restrictions.” (17se21)

Governor Denny Tamaki held a press conference on 16 September. He called for thorough measures to combat the spread of Covid-19 during this weekend’s long holiday. The governor noted, “Whether or not we can suppress the  virus spread at this point, we’re at the critical moment when Okinawa can look forward to the lifting of the long protracted State of Emergency. While looking forward to an increase in tourism, he still had to urge diligence to those entering the prefecture with neither need nor urgency.

The effective reproduction rate, which indicates how many people one victim can spread the infection to, is down below the over 0.57 estimated by the Prefecture. Governor Tamaki stated “If it drops to the  0.5 level, by the end of September we can relax the State of Emergency to Spread Prevention.” He intends to “ask the National Government to move to Spread Prevention,” if the prefecture’s people thoroughly combat the virus spread during Silver Week and the trend is suppressed.”

According to Mr. Itokazu, public medical technical supervisor of the Prefectural Medical Health Bureau, the effective reproduction rate of the virus in Okinawa’s remote islands is lower than that of Okinawa Island itself: Miyako at 0.37 and Yaeyama at 0.26 people. Everywhere in the prefecture, the number of new positive infections is decreasing and the number hospitalized is beginning to decrease as well, he said. He estimated that the number of expected infections during this one week would be around 1200 to 1500 people.

Regarding the increase of victims under ten and in their teens, Governor Tamaki pointed out, “Those under 20 account for 60% of all victims. In order to suppress the spread among children, it’s essential that adults don’t carry the virus home to their families.” He called on households and students who want vaccination to get vaccinated during Silver Week at the large-scale vaccination centers.

Translator’s note:

Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  2. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be of great help.
