The Okinawa LDP criticizes the prefecture’s governor for his work on the Okinawa Promotion budget. (25se21)

From 24 September, general questioning began at the Okinawa Prefectural Assembly. Among the topics the opposition party members questioned were the Tamaki prefectural response to the expected reduction in the government’s budget next year for Okinawa Promotion and Covid-19 strategy.

First to rise with a question was LDP Assembly member Shimabukuro. He pursued Governor Tamaki’s response on the reason, in the case of next year’s Okinawa Promotion budget, why the National Government budget request was cut to 300 billion yen, a level not seen since the budget of 2011.

LDP Assembly Member Dai Shimabukuro argued, “Okinawa prefectural authorities could not explain to the Cabinet the need for 360 billion yen. To put it simply, Governor, you, as the leader of your prefectural government, failed in negotiations with the Cabinet!”

In response, Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki countered that the Prefecture engaged in discussion after discussion based on the hoped for 360 billion.” He continued, “The departments responsible time and again vigorously pressed our opinions in negotiations with the Cabinet, providing it with materials that can prove their effectiveness for individual businesses.” He added, “From our perspective, we wanted to do the best we could to preserve the 300 billion yen level.”

On the afternoon of 24 September as well, the Okinawa Prefectural Assembly general questioning will continue with questions from LDP assembly members. The prefectural policy on Covid-19 and other matters will be questioned.

Translator’s note:

Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  2. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be of great help.
