Covid-19: the Prefecture’s request for shortened business hours will be cancelled at the end of this month; focus on prevention of another outbreak and economic balance from now on. (29oc21)

On the afternoon of 28 October, Governor Denny Tamaki held a press conference at the Prefectural Office. He announced the end of the prefecture’s own measures to prevent the widespread contagion of Covid-19. He will cancel his request to restaurants and bars for shortened business hours on 31 October and will establish a timeframe to prevent a rebound of the infection and to balance economic activity. The governor will also continue expansion of the system of business economic promotion and medical examination supply.  But, he is requesting that the prefecture’s people continue dining out in groups of 4 or under and within 2 hours.

As for business economic promotion, the Prefecture will push the use of the “GoTo Eat” meal tickets. The tickets can be used from 8 November for inside dining at bars and restaurants displaying the Prefectural Virus Prevention Measures Certificate. From 1 November,  it will start the Okinawa Experience Support Project, to promote the use of coupon tickets at tourism businesses, and Okinawa Sai Hakken Support Project, to encourage the use of chartered buses. The start of the Okinawa Sai Hakken Campaign fourth stage, to help the prefecture’s people with tourism within the prefecture, is currently being arranged.

The Prefecture is also setting up policies divided into stages in case of a Covid-19 rebound. For cities, at the health department level, if the number of infections per 100 thousand surpass 25 in a week, that department will issue a caution notice. If the number surpasses an average of 32 in one day prefecture-wide, without clusters, the whole prefecture will move to invoke caution. If the one-day average surpasses 53 or there is a quick surge surpassing 1.3 times the previous week, strong measures according to the national coping policy will be taken.

In preparation for a 6th wave of contagion, the Prefecture has set up a plan to insure the availability of hospital beds. Bar and restaurant staff will continue to get free check-ups. PCR exams will be expanded to whoever wants them. Public relations will promote having people finish their vaccinations.

Governor Tamaki stressed, “If the people of our prefecture work together as one, it has been proven that we can overcome the strength of this virus, even the Delta variant which has become more prevalent.” He further requested that the prefecture’s people  maintain their protection measures against the continuing contagion.

Translator’s note:

Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
