Governor Tamaki insists the PFAS in sewer water “Be examined for whether the source of the pollution derives from the US Military.” (4se21)

In the Kin District of Okinawa Prefecture, the organic fluorine compounds PFOS, PFAS, and PFOA in quantities exceeding national  provisional guidelines have been discovered in sewer water. On the morning of 4 September, Okinawa Prefecture Governor Denny Tamaki addressed the problem in answer to a press corps question, “The source of the pollution must be investigated. We’ll politely examine whether or not the origin of the pollution lies with the US Military. It’s imperative that we pass on the result to the people of the prefecture.”

PFOS and PFOA showed up in the district’s examination. In the Kin District, which abuts the US Military Camp Hansen base, PFOS and PFOA exceeding national provisional guidelines showed up in both waterways and underground water sources. Governor Tamaki stressed, “The Okinawa Defense Bureau ought to work together with the American side, 3 or 4 on each side, to examine the water. I’ve called on the Prefectural Defense bureau and the American side to do just that.”

The Kin District uses the district’s underground water and mixes it with the Prefectural Corporate Bureau water which it gets from the Ishikawa Water Treatment Plant. However, hearing of PFAS and such being discovered, the district is showing an inclination to speed up sourcing its water totally from the Corporate Bureau, as had originally been proposed.

On increasing the supply of water to the Kin District, Governor Tamaki noted, “Although I haven’t heard a detailed announcement of the plan, we want to cooperate as much as possible to provide the district with safe and secure water. I want to call on the national government to cooperate with us on this.”

Translator’s note:

Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  2. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be of great help.
