In the final stage of the House of Representatives election, 11 candidates struggle for support in Okinawa’s election districts with tomorrow the final day of voting. (30oc21)
The counting of ballots for the 49th House of Representatives Election will take place on 31 October. This is the first national political election in the prefecture since the spread of the Covid-19 virus. 11 candidates, 6 incumbent and 5 new, are standing for election in the prefecture’s 4 districts.
Each and every candidate is roundly debating such points of contention as disease prevention policies, economic revitalization, and measures to eliminate the dangers posed by the US Military Futenma Airfield. On the afternoon of 30 October, at places such as intersections, booster ceremonies are being held to conclude the election campaign.
The time between the dissolution of the House of Representatives and the counting of ballots in the current election has been a mere 17 days, the shortest period ever. Along with confidence in Fumio Kishida’s Cabinet, the election will also hand down a judgement on the continuous 9 year rule of the Abe and Suga governments.
With only one year left in the prefectural administration of Governor Denny Tamaki, the election will also point out his reputation among the prefecture’s people.
29 October was the middle day in the final 3 day stage of the offense/defense struggle. Each candidate fought for broad support by driving around their election districts in campaign cars from early morning and holding street corner speeches and rallies. Until 8 p.m. on 30 October, the day before the designated ballot counting day, the electioneering will continue in every municipality in the prefecture. On the same day, advance voting will be held in Taketomi District. (trans.note: This probably refers to Taketomi Island which may need early voting due to communication difficulties.)

Translator’s note:
Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
