Okinawa Prefecture muses reuse or even disposal of floating pumice at an all department countermeasures conference. (2de21)

On 1 December, Okinawa Prefecture held its Floating Pumice Countermeasures Conference, which is a meeting of every department on the problem of the flow of large swathes of pumice into the prefecture. As the nation is carrying out a disaster assessment, there was a shared awareness that if no decision were made on how to make use of the collected pumice, it would be possible to take care of it by disposal.

On the other hand, since there is concern that the flow of pumice will extend over a long time, it was pointed out that  there is room to get the nation’s understanding for storage of the pumice until a use can be found. The Prefecture is soliciting ideas for using the pumice from the public right now. As of 29 November, 5 ideas have been received such as for herbicides and absorbents for heavy oil spills. The Prefecture will be looking for ways to use the pumice until the solicitation for ideas ends on 8 December. However, since the pumice is highly saline, caution is being urged on its raw use in agriculture as it may have a deleterious effect on growing crops.

The Prefecture will coordinate with Fisheries Ministry which has charge of fishing ports and the National Land and Transportation Ministry, charged with harbors and bays, to carry out damage assessment in January of next year. During the assessment, ways of disposing of the pumice must be reported. If concrete ways of using the pumice cannot be decided by that time, disposal is said  to be the only possibility.

As of 29 November, pumice has washed up to the shores of 38 municipalities. The Prefecture is coordinating with every ministry and department along with Treasury Department subsidy enterprises,  expecting to receive about 1.4 billion yen in additional assistance from the Environmental Ministry.

Translator’s note:

Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
