“Our anger is unrelenting!” from the governor and “Only one day after our protest!” from the mayor of Naha, as Ospreys take off from Naha Military Port. (1de21)

With the news that 3 Marine MV22 Ospreys took off from the US Military Naha Bay Port Facility (Naha Military Port), Governor Denny Tamaki announced from a written statement on 30 November, “They’re mocking the will of the prefecture’s people. Our anger is unrelenting.” He had previously made a request to both the Japanese and American governments that not even one more aircraft be permitted to takeoff or land at Naha Military Port.

At the return of Okinawa Prefecture to  Japan, Protocol 5.5 set out terms for the use of US military facilities in Okinawa. That protocol strictly nailed down how they would be used.

The governor pointed out that prior to the takeoffs and landings notification was given to neither the Prefecture nor the City of Naha. He stressed, “The normalization of the use of aircraft at Naha Military Port increases the burden of bases on the prefecture’s people. It’s absolutely unacceptable.”

On the very day after she had protested such acts, Naha’s mayor reacted with, “Extremely regrettable” and “They’re threatening our security!” As for the take-off of the MV22 Osprey vertical take-off and landing aircraft from the US Military Naha Bay Port Facility (Naha Military Port) on 30 November, Naha Mayor Mikiko Shiroma announced her comment on the same day, “I feel filled with regret especially since the take-offs took place the very day after our protests and our request pleading that the take-off and landing of military aircraft from Naha Military Port be halted. We will once again strongly protest to the US Military, the Okinawa Defense Bureau,  and the Okinawa office of the Foreign Ministry.”

Mayor Shiroma had previously stated, “The take-off and landing of military aircraft at Naha Military Port is totally unacceptable since it threatens the security of Naha’s people, the people of the prefecture, and tourists as well.  I strongly request that from now on it never be done again. On 29 November, the very previous day, Mayor Shiroma had visited the Okinawa office of the Foreign Ministry and the Okinawa Defense Bureau requesting that they work with the  US Military so that US military aircraft would not do their take-offs and landings at Naha Military Port.

Translator’s note:

Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
