Concerned over a Taiwan emergency, Governor Denny: “There ought not be joint use” of SDF facilities. (8Ja22)

At the Japan US Security Conference (2 plus 2) on 7 January, Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki showed the concerns on his mind of a Taiwan emergency in joint discussions. He noted his stance in opposition to joint use of SDF (Japan Self Defence Force) facilities and pointed out, “In a case such as a Taiwan emergency, it is absolutely unacceptable  that Okinawa should be in a situation where it becomes a target for an attack. When you strengthen SDF deployments and add to that joint use of SDF facilities, for the people of this prefecture, you’re wrapping them up in an especially great unease. Joint use ought not be done!”

The governor made a  further request to the National Government, “I hope we will strive to foster trust, while relieving the tensions building up in the Asia-Pacific region,” further noting, “I would welcome the development of a joint effort plan to handle states of emergency.” He also alluded to the SDF buildup broadly in the Ryukyu Islands where, “Joint use of American and Japanese facilities is being allowed to increase.”

The governor also spoke of the continuing enlargement of the new base construction at Henoko in Nago connected with the relocation of the US Military Futenma Airfield. Touching on his rejection of the request for permission for changes in the landfill to improve the soft seabed, the governor noted, “I refuse to accept the thinking that says the Henoko problem has only one solution. Both Japan and the US ought to confer diligently together on it.”

Translator’s note:

Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
