Okinawa Spread Prevention ends on 20 February. Governor Tamaki announces, “The virus spread is ongoing, group meals limited to 4 people.” (17fe22)
Governor Denny Tamaki held a conference at the Prefectural Building on 16 February. He revealed his plan not to ask the National Government to apply the Spread Prevention Extraordinary Measures (Extraordinary Measures) against Covid-19 after 21 February. The same day, he informed the National Government of the decision.
Governor Tamaki offered as his reasons that the spread situation had generally met the Prefecture’s basic criteria for lifting the Extraordinary Measures and the Prefecture’s panel of experts approved of the lifting. The governor elaborated, “If we adopt stringent policies against the virus spread hereafter, even after the current measures are lifted, we can manage the situation. He requested the cooperation of the people of the prefecture in continuing to battle the spread of the virus.
On the other hand, although there is a trend toward improvement, as the contagion continues among children and the elderly, the governor emphasized, “This isn’t a situation where we can let down our guard!” If the virus again becomes wide-spread, he intends to ask for reimplementation of the Extraordinary Measures. His decision was ratified at the Prefectural Prevention Headquarters the same day.
It was anticipated that Okinawa’s Extraordinary Measures would be lifted after the National Government had recently held its Prevention Headquarters meeting. With the National Government’s basic plan for dealing with the issue in hand, the Prefecture will decide on criteria for judging when to request the National Government for a new plan for dealing with the issue or Extraordinary Measures hereafter.
Governor Tamaki tolled the warning bell, “The virus spread is ongoing. In the unlikely event of a rebound occurring, the possibility of reactivating the Extraordinary Measures will come up.” He further recommended that people continue to comply with the group meals rules: within 4 in a group, within 2 hours per meal, and no second parties.
The Prefecture has set aside until the end of March as “Vaccine Booster Promotion Time.” From 17 February, at the large scale vaccination centers, applications for booster shots will be accepted targeting those 18 and over who have already had their 2nd vaccination.

Translator’s note:
Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
