50 thousand signatures submitted to governor supporting his refusal of permission for new base construction. (16mr22)
“Don’t fill Henoko’s sea with sludge!" Metropolitan Liaison Committee is constituted of 28 city resident groups and others. On 15 March, its members and others visited Governor Denny Tamaki at the Prefectural Office building. They handed the governor 50,234 signatures supporting his decision to reject the requested changes to the landfill at the new base construction at Henoko in Nago needed to support the weak seabed there.
Governor Tamaki thanked them, promising, “As these signatures represent our prefecture’s people, these are an especially great support for me. Without letting myself be swayed by even an inch in my stated conviction that I must put my heart and soul into seeing to it that the new base at Henoko will not be allowed to be built, let’s all of us together give it our all!”
Mikiko Gaima of the Kanto block of the One Tsubo Anti-war Landlords Association stated, “With these signatures, we want to preserve Okinawa’s seas. We want the opinions of the people to be held in the highest esteem. We’ve gathered the wishes of people one by one who want to cheer on our Governor Denny. We won’t let anyone push you around. Together we’ll give it our all. (Repeating in the Ryukyu language) Maju-n, chibarana ya-tai!”
Nobuko Kato from the liaison committee stated, “We’ve brought together many, not just from this country but from overseas. I feel we want to extend the wishes of a great many people who want you to do your best as governor.”
Last June, the liaison committee launched its net signature campaign. But it really began soliciting signatures after the governor announced his refusal of permission in November of last year. Starting from within Japan, endorsements also poured in from North and South America, Europe, Africa, and other foreign countries.

Translator’s note:
Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
