Okinawa Prefecture held its Covid-19 Prevention Headquarters Conference on the afternoon of 24 March. Prevention measures were decided in order to continue social economic activity and prevent the return of widespread contagion with a plan to combat the omicron variant using special rules and activity restrictions aimed at those who have had contact with the virus.

At ordinary businesses, primary and secondary schools, kindergartens, pre-schools, special assistance schools and such, special rules for those with close virus contacts will end. The 7 day quarantine of those who are asymptomatic will also end. From 24 March,  relief for those with close virus contacts will be put in place.

On 16 March, the Health and Labor Ministry put out administrative guidelines relaxing special rules and activity restrictions on those in close contact with the omicron variant. On that news, the Prefecture held meetings of experts and groups concerned with economic strategy to hear their opinions.

On 24 March, the Prevention Headquarters Committee formally made their decisions. No quarantine is needed for primary and secondary schoolers and such who have had virus contact but are asymptomatic, and self restraint is requested for “high risk activity” such as contact with the elderly and those with underlying illnesses. Testing at PCR centers for those with contact  or school and health care test centers is recommended to be carried out.

The 7 day quarantine, special rules for close contact, and such will continue at health facilities, facilities for the elderly, disabled, or those otherwise at high risk  and medical facilities for family residence. The continuation of “measures for prevention of a return to wide-spread contagion and for a continuation of economic activity” such as meals limited to four people and within 2 hours are still requested by the Prefecture from 1 to 28 April.

Governor Denny Tamaki made an announcement about the relaxation of rules on close contacts, activity restrictions, and such after the Prevention Headquarters Conference. He reminded all, “Until now and without change, it is of utmost importance that each and every one of us thoroughly follow basic prevention measures. It is essential to take scrupulous care, even apart from areas where the contagion is spreading quickly and widely or areas where there is fear of inviting the spread to high risk people such as the elderly and the severely ill.”

Translator’s note:

Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
