Governor Denny president requests that next year’s ministerial meeting for the G7 Summit be held in Okinawa. (9mr22)

TOKYO: On 8 March, Governor Denny Tamaki held a face-to-face meeting with Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi and Cabinet Minister Charged with Okinawa Kosaburo Nishime. He requested that the ministerial meetings associated with the G7 Summit in 2023 be held in Okinawa. This was the first request to the Japanese Government since the invitation was announced in February. The governor had also requested a meeting with Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno, but the request was turned down over a scheduling conflict.

Alluding to Okinawa’s record of success in holding the Okinawa Summit of 2000 and the G8 Science and Technology Summit of 2008, Governor Tamaki handed the request document to Foreign Minister Hayashi strongly noting the significance of Okinawa as the venue because of its position  as “the hub of Asia and the Pacific region.” According to Governor Tamaki, Foreign Minister Hayashi responded, “I want to work to give all concerned prefectures their fair share.

At the meeting, Governor Tamaki remarked, “I also have the expectation of passing on to the world Okinawa’s thoughts on the 50th anniversary of our reversion to Japan.” He also expressed his thoughts on also wanting to tie the summit to the use of the second runway at Naha Airport, whose rate of flights has been sluggish under Covid-19.

Translator’s note:

Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
