“Nuchi du Takara” (Life is our treasure) Club asks Governor Tamaki for a “declaration against Self Defense Force (SDF) deployment”. (23mr22)

The “No More Okinawa War: Nuchi du Takara Club”, which advocates preventing Okinawa from ever again becoming a battlefield, met with Governor Denny Tamaki at the Prefectural Office on 22 March. The club submitted a petition requesting that the governor officially declare his open opposition to the SDF missile unit and the making of Okinawa an attack hub in the continuing Taiwan emergency.

The club pointed out that the petition submitted to the governor concerned the Southwest Island group which has become a hub for military action in the continuing emergency in Taiwan and the Senkaku Islands, noting, “This can only be seen as entering into an emergency war-time response stance.”  Moreover, prodding governor Tamaki with, “A governor’s greatest responsibility in office is to protect the lives of his prefecture’s people”, the club continued its call for action.

On receipt of the petition, Governor Tamaki stressed, “Okinawa must avoid at any cost becoming the target of an attack. I want to submit that message from the Prefecture also as we wonder whether the Japanese Government will connect its actions, in whatever stance it takes, to the creation of security guarantees for all of Asia.”

Hiroji Yamashiro, joint representative of the club who handed in the petition, requested, “Every person in the prefecture is afraid we’ll become a battlefield. We want you to stand at our head in matters such as gathering information and negotiating with the Japanese Government.”

According to cabinet authorities from the Foreign and Defense Ministries, the Japan-US Security Consultative Committee (2+2) compiled a joint declaration on strengthening the SDF posture in the Southwest Island Group and joint use of US-Japan facilities. Also, according to reporting by Kyodo Press, before the 2+2 meeting, in preparation for a Taiwan emergency, a joint draft war plan was formulated in which Japan and the US made the Southwest Island Group its hub.

Translator’s note:

Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
