Residents rise up in Okinawa to ban jet skis and “Give us back our peaceful beaches” while hoodlums (hangure) look for easy money. (12mr22)

At Tsuhako’s Tenno beach in Sashiki in the city of Nanjo, the riding of jet skis has reached the point of being a danger to swimmers. On 27 February, Tsuhako held a mass concerted action rally at Tenno Beach requesting that riding jet skis and such be banned. About 200 residents of the district attended. A resolution was adopted requesting the establishment of regulations to control the jet ski problem.

Hereafter, the District will send the resolution to Governor Denny Tamaki, the chief of the 11th Administration Headquarters of the Coast Guard, and others. The resolution points out,”There is a danger of collisions when riding jet skis. The free use for residents of their own water space is being inhibited.”

It was requested that the Prefecture and the Coast Guard, which administer Tenno Beach, “put in place regulations and aggressively enforce laws.”

District Mayor Juntatsu (=順達?)Takaesu noted, “It’s dangerous for our residents. We’re raising our voices over what we want done. Ban jet skis from Tenno Beach and give us back our peaceful beaches.”

Annoying actions are continuing by hoodlums, who have repeatedly committed crimes, unrelated to organized crime groups and such, at Tenno Beach. In September of 2021, they were cooking and selling meat on the beach. Since they were managing a temporary food service shop, the Prefectural Police arrested the hoodlums on suspicion of violating the food sanitation law.

According to the Prefectural Police, because one of the men was a member of the designated organized  crime group Asahi Ryukai, it was quite possible that profits from the sales would end up in its coffers.

Translator’s note:

Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
