The governor considers using even public housing in accepting Ukrainian refugees, noting that Okinawa Prefecture “will be unsparing in international cooperation”. (15mr22)
With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in mind with its need for humanitarian aid, Governor Denny Tamaki announced on 14 March that he would assist by receiving Ukrainian and other refugees. He is setting up a system for securing public housing and providing daily necessities, such as food, as well as establishing services such as portals for consultation. Moreover, considering that the refugees may remain for a long time, the governor is also thinking of pushing for assistance such as in finding jobs.
On 6 March, Okinawa City Mayor Sachio Kuwae also announced his thoughts on cooperating in the reception of refugees. So now even within the prefecture, concrete consideration of assistance has begun.
Governor Denny Tamaki emphasized, “It is unacceptable that precious lives be stolen by war. In unison with international society, every kind of assistance is required!” On 14 March, discussions were also held at the headquarters meeting. All division chiefs offered their suggestions on a concrete strategy for assistance. According to Prefectural Headquarters, wide-ranging suggestions were advanced such as the establishment of a council for assistance.
Okinawa City Mayor Kuwae made a statement of his intention to receive refugees and is preparing a location in case of a request for cooperation to local governments from the Japanese Government declaring the acceptance of refugees. In raising the subject of the use of public housing, Mayor Kuwae emphasized, ”I want to consider food, clothing, and housing. With unsparing international cooperation, we can make our contribution to world peace if it’s possible.”
According to the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the number of refugees from Ukraine has already surpassed 2.5 million and hereafter in the next several months the number is estimated to hit 4 million.

Translator’s note:
Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
