With a “Wide-spread Infection Warning” in the Yaeyama District, Governor Tamaki requests that farewell parties be held without drinking or meals in the city of Ishigaki and towns of Taketomi and Yonaguni. (10mr22)

On 9 March, Okinawa Prefecture Governor Denny Tamaki, out of concern over the stress on the medical system of the high rate of Covid-19 infections in the Yaeyama District (the city of Ishigaki and towns of Taketomi and Yonaguni), issued a “Wide-spread Infection Warning” in that region. The applicable period will be 2 weeks starting from 9 March. Governor Tamaki requested that those feeling ill refrain from outside activity or going to school. He also asked for consideration beforehand of holding such events as farewell and graduation parties without drinking and meals.

In the Yaeyama District, the criteria for considering renewing the request for Spread Prevention Extraordinary Measures had been momentarily surpassed: (1) the rate of hospital beds in use has gone over 60% and (2) the number of those newly testing positive for Covid-19 had gone over double the previous week. However, the increase in the rate of hospital beds in use was due mainly to a cluster at a medical facility and the rate has currently decreased.

On the other hand, the Prefecture confirmed 783 newly infected Covid-19 victims from 10  to 90 or over on 9 March. The largest group was 179 between 10 to 19. There was a reduction of 183 victims from Wednesday of the previous week. Also, the numbers went down for four consecutive days compared to the previous week. Okinawa Prefecture was 10th in the country for new infections per population of 100 thousand, with a rate of 360.17 as of 8 March.

In the Yaeyama District, infections related to eating and drinking increased to 12 from 3 the previous week. Public Health Supervisor Itokazu noted, “We had no choice but to issue a warning in those municipalities.” In the town of Yonaguni, it is claimed that there is also a cluster in progress connected to a child-care center.

16 individuals related to the US Military have also been infected.

Translator’s note:

Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
