Iha officially announces his candidacy for the House of Councilors, “I want to stop cold Okinawa’s ever again becoming a battlefield!” (30ap22)
Splendor of Okinawa: Wax begonia along the Tengan River
Facing the summer House of Councilors election, incumbent Yoichi Iha (70), running for the Okinawan Electoral District, held a press conference on 29 April in Naha. He formally announced his candidacy with his eye on a second term.
Iha firmly promised, “In order to make prosperous Uchina-’s (Okinawa’s) future and the lives of its people, we will fight to the end for the sake of creating a peaceful Okinawa!” He reminded everyone of the weak seabed at the new base construction site at Henoko in Nago, noting, “The construction isn’t even technologically feasible. I think that, despite all the power of the national administration itself, the new base can’t be considered possible anytime soon.”
Regarding the six years of his first term, Iha stated that, with the Henoko base construction as central, he has continued to emphasize his efforts on Okinawa’s base issue. He expressed his intention, if elected again, to focus his attention, in addition to solving the base issue, on tourism, which has suffered a tremendous blow from the prolonged spread of Covid-19, and to work on other areas, such as the revival of industry within the prefecture and promotion of the prefecture.
On the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the Taiwan emergency, he reminded his audience, “I want to stop cold Okinawa’s ever again becoming a battleground. We’re going to solve whatever problem that may arise with peaceful diplomacy. And that must be Japan’s fundamental basic plan as a peaceful nation as well.”
Governor Denny Tamaki, the forces of All Okinawa from the Diet and Okinawa Assembly, Naha City Mayor Mikiko Shiroma, and others attended the conference.
Yoichi Iha was born on 4 January 1952 in Ginowan and graduated from Ryukyu University. He served 2 terms in the Okinawa Assembly from 1996 and 2 terms from 2003 as mayor of Ginowan. In July of 2016, he was elected to his first term in the House of Councilors.

Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
