(OKINAWA) The start of the Okinawa City mayoral election was announced on 17 April. The declared candidates are Masakazu Moriyama (73) who advocates reform of the municipal administration and the current Mayor Sachio Kuwae (66) who pleads for a continuation of his municipal policies. The election has the elements of a classic joust.
17 April marked the campaign start and call to the trenches ceremonies for both candidates. Bathed in the cries of encouragement from supporters, they clenched their microphones and swore victory.
The election campaign opened its curtains with promises of various administrative policies such as combating poverty and revival of the city center businesses. Candidate Moriyama held his camp’s campaign ceremony starting at 9 a.m. at Koza Crossroads. His supporters gathered wearing their characteristic green headbands. After receiving his campaign sash from his wife Kuniko, Moriyama tensed his facial expression and called for cooperation in earning support from the assembled crowd.
Taking the podium, Governor Denny Tamaki called for a renewal of the city administration, “Let’s work together to build a new Okinawa City, led by our Moriyama!” The candidate’s supporters responded with cries of support and the beat of drums and applause.
Candidate Moriyama stressed, “I pledge as your candidate to build a city amenable to our people where nobody gets left behind,” as he exchanged fist-bumps with people along the road. Moriyama proudly touts his physical strength in daily jogging ten kilometers. After three rounds of the cry, “Go for it!”, without recourse to the campaign car, he pleaded for support from voters as he jogged off toward Chibana.

Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
