Splendor of Okinawa: Silver cocks comb, in a field in Uruma

A mass rally of the prefecture’s people expecting a crowd of around 10 thousand was planned to be held  in Naha to coincide with the pivotal 50th anniversary of Reversion. However, it was announced at a press briefing that, at an executive committee meeting on 16 April, the Action Committee established by governor Denny Tamaki’s Prefectural Assembly’s ruling party canceled the 30 April rally.  It was decided to resume planning on the project after the wide-spread Covid-19 contagion has been controlled. Holding a bipartisan rally is also under consideration.

Executive Director Prefectural Assembly Member Sueko Yamauchi stressed, “Consideration is still underway.” She further requested understanding of the Action Committee’s judgment. Covid-19 has spread  widely. becoming the A7 wave. It was decided that holding the event, “Would put the participants at too great a risk”, after Governor Tamaki had called forcefully for thorough contamination prevention measures.

The Action Committee is considering putting in place an opportunity for the people of the prefecture to reflect on the burden of the US Military bases continuing to this day and the 1971 Yara Declaration by Reversion Day on 15 May. Something like an online event is also under consideration.

On 20 April an Executive Committee meeting will be held to talk over the matter.

Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
