Splendor of Okinawa: Lavender, on a wall in Uruma

Okinawa is approaching 50 years since its reversion to Japan. The enormous burden of the bases and various other Okinawan issues need to be raised and its future in the next 50 years considered. To that end, the “Online Mass Rally of the Prefecture’s People, seeking a prosperous Okinawa proud of its peace without bases and asking if the Yara Declaration can be realized 50 years after Reversion?”, sponsored by its executive committee of the same name, was held on 30  April. Looking back on Okinawa’s history and the current situation, the target of realizing “An Okinawa prosperous in peace without bases” was confirmed.

6 joint representatives took the podium. They spoke about Reversion and its requests. In addition, slogans and resolutions, such as a request for the abandonment of the new base construction at Henoko and a reform of the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), were adopted.

The mass rally’s resolutions and slogans were reported to Governor Denny Tamaki. Petitions to the Japanese Government are also under consideration. The ruling party of the Prefectural Assembly, which supports Governor Tamaki, was central in the planning of the Prefectural People’s Mass Rally.

A crowd of around 10,000 participants was originally planned for the formal opening of the event. However, considering the circumstances of the spread of Covid-19, it was changed to an online format to be broadcast by the website YouTube. The number of viewers is scheduled to be made public at a later date.

Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
