Incumbent Governor Denny Tamaki (62) has confirmed the final adjustments to make the formal public announcement on 11 June of his candidacy for the gubernatorial election with ballots to be opened on 11 September.
On 29 May, the coordination committee, which does the organization of the prefectural administration ruling party and labor unions supporting Governor Tamaki, set the time of the announcement to open right after Assemblyman Katsutoshi Toyama of Ti-da Peace Net, newly named Speaker of the Prefectural Assembly, launches his new administration. The Prefectural Administration ruling party headquarters decided, “We pushed to adjust making the announcement on 11 June, just in time for the crucial 3 month notification period.”
On another front, Governor Tamaki received a request for his candidacy from young volunteers in Okinawa City on 28 May. At a press conference after the committee meeting, the governor stated, “My body and soul both were strengthened by the heartfelt enthusiasm of their warm request,” showing his forward looking posture. But, without expressing a clear acknowledgement of his candidacy, he stated, “The topic of what I should do has many unknown factors. I will notify my support groups of the request from the volunteers. I want to put my heart and soul into making my own decision on this.
Moreover, when asked his impression of the experience in the Okinawa Assembly and as mayor of Ginowan of Atsushi Sakuma, chosen the same day as the Liberal Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate, the governor countered, “I think he works hard doing local stuff every day.”

Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
