On 19 May, the Prefecture held a meeting of its Covid-19 Prevention Headquarters. The group decided to continue the Covid-19 Widespread Contagion Alert, which has been issued for the Okinawa Island and Miyako Island regions, until 26 May.
After the Headquarters meeting on 19 May, Governor Denny Tamaki held a press conference. The governor made clear that, due to the tight situation of school PCR testing, he was considering the distribution of antigen qualitative test kits to assess their effectiveness in the short-term. As for the 23 June Memorial Day ceremony to mourn all the dead of the Okinawa Campaign, he expressed his intention of holding a scaled-down event for the third year in a row.
On the same day, the Prefecture announced that 2307 people, aged between 10 and 90 plus, had been newly infected with Covid-19. At the news conference, when the subject of the continuing widespread contagion among those under 10 was raised in relation to the activation of the Contagion Prevention Extraordinary Measures, Governor Tamaki expressed a negative view, “There is contrary evidence in the numbers that even measures centering on eating establishments aren’t having much of an effect.”
On the rate of hospital beds in use, the governor agreed, “After the string of holidays (GW), the level has continued to trend up to a high level,” and raised an alarm that medical resources are tight. He also called for prudence in emergency reception targeted at Covid-19 testing as well as contagion prevention measures and such at schools.
The governor further noted on the Memorial Day ceremonies to mourn all the dead of the Okinawa Campaign, “Our measures are continuing to be thorough and our departments are adjusting to determine around how many of our prefecture’s people can be invited.
As for when the antigen qualitative tests would be introduced into the schools, he let his comment stand at, “As quickly as feasible.”
Health and Medical Chief Itokazu spoke on the Covid infection situation in the schools. After noting that there have been over 100 requests per day for the school PCR tests from schools, students, and nursery schools, he expressed his acknowledgement that there were many cases of people, who were infected at home, bringing the infection to school.

Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
