With his term ending with the Okinawa gubernatorial election in September, Governor Denny Tamaki called a press conference for 11 June. He has decided to make  the final adjustments to announce his run for a second term at this news event for those concerned in his prefectural ruling party.

The Okinawa Branch of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) plans to decide on their chosen candidate on 28 May. From June on, along with the summer House of Councilors election, the front lines will be on the march.

Governor Tamaki won his first election in 2018 by raising his cry against the plan to relocate the US Military Futenma Airfield from Ginowan to Henoko in Nago, both within the prefecture. This time, too, in the ballot opening on 11 September for the gubernatorial election, the battle will turn on the still important point of who is for or against the planned relocation.

Governor Tamaki has already indicated to his supporters his thoughts of running for reelection. However, he had to take into consideration the ceremonies on 15 May for the 50th anniversary of Okinawa’s reversion to Japan, which the Prefecture celebrated jointly with the Japanese Government. So, he will not formally announce his run until 11 June.

The Okinawa LDP will hold an open presentation meeting on 28 May with 5 candidate hopefuls who were nominated by local LDP Diet members and representatives of their support groups. The same day, the candidate to run will be selected.

Denny in the News: news about Okinawan Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
