“As for me, I can’t deny I was taken aback by the Sudden shock,” said Governor Denny Tamaki at a press conference on 10 June. The governor was recalling his reaction to the public announcement of “The vision of Cabinet Minister Nishime,” in which Cabinet Minister for Okinawa Kosaburo Nishime looked toward the realization of a strong Okinawan economy.


The notification to the Prefecture about the “Vision” was made clear just the day before its publication and the governor took a shot at him with, “It’s essential to exchange opinions by gathering them together with the Prefecture.” The governor expressed his displeasure of getting the publication on 31 May as a “sudden shock.”


The National Government side (Nishime) noted, “There’s no change in attitude toward the Prefecture. If the document were to be read with care, the sudden shock would disappear.” Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno replied coolly, “It’s a plan the National Government worked out. So, I’ve heard there were no special prior adjustments with the Prefecture.


The governor worked to gather input from the chiefs of every sector within the prefecture to create his 6th Okinawa Promotion Plan. So, his objection was, “It was essential to certify the plan and its direction.”  He further claimed, “For the realization of a strong Okinawan economy, careful coordination with local governments is essential. I wish that hereafter there will be a prior explanation and a meeting for the expression of opinions.”


The National Government’s “sudden shock” at the governor’s objection was also hasty.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

Governor Denny receives the report on JUNGLIA at the 4 month mark after its opening. (7de25)

Splendor of Okinawa: Temple Tree, Mihama Beach, 1de25 CEO Takeshi Kato of Japan Entertainment (JE), which manages JUNGLIA Okinawa, visited Governor Denny Tamaki at the Prefectural Office on 28 November.  　 The CEO reported on the 4 months since the attraction’s opening. He repeatedly brought up dealing with operational improvements and such based on the voices of visitors to the park.  　 The CEO specifically mentioned the evening concerts in the park’s garden and, starting from December, the free entry of one child with each adult, targeting the prefecture’s people. CEO Kato stated, “We’d like to be contributing to Okinawa’s tourism as well.” Governor Tamaki, alluding to his speech the same day, entitled “Declaration on Sustainable Tourism”, stated, “For the people, employees, and tourists of our prefecture, this is an important win-win format.
