At his scheduled 22 July press conference, Okinawa Prefecture Governor Denny Tamaki announced the schedule for the visit to Okinawa of Ukrainian Ambassador to Japan Sergiy Korsunsky. He will visit between 5 and 7 August.

The governor confirmed that a meeting between them will be on 5 August, the same day the ambassador arrives. He further noted that, because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, measures are needed to protect refugees from there, and,  “We want to exchange opinions on what sort of assistance is needed,”

The governor had met the ambassador in Tokyo on 13 July. He explained that Ambassador Korsunsky had then expressed his hope to make a courtesy call on the governor during a visit to Okinawa for a meeting with the 9 Ukrainian refugee households in the prefecture.

According to the Office of the Prefectural Assembly, Chair of the Assembly Noboru Akamine is also arranging a meeting through the Ukrainian Embassy.

Former House of Representatives Member Mikio Shimoji has announced his candidacy in the September prefectural gubernatorial race. He has proposed that a solution to the problem of the new base construction at Henoko would be to use the aircraft hangers already built on the landfill at Henoko, but discontinue landfill in OuraBay, where the seabed is weak.

The governor retorted, “I’ve heard the report. But I’ll decline comment.” He then added, “Our stance is that we’re against any new base construction at Henoko.”

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
