On the evening of 19 July, the Okinawa Prefectural Covid-19 Experts Committee met. Voices were raised by the experts with claims such as, “Events ought to be canceled!” and “From the view of health care workers, events like those that include alcohol are a different world.” Opinions on stronger countermeasures came up repeatedly, such as that the Prefecture should get concrete measures issued toward behavioral changes in the prefecture’s population.
Doctors and others from the health sector, over and over, brought up the limitations of emergency health care and announced that, as of the evening of 19 July, over 800 health care workers were on leave due to coming into extremely close contact with the disease. They claimed that, in the absence of restrictions on activity by the administration, “The health sector feels it’s carrying on the struggle orphaned from assistance,” while the number of victims skyrockets. They further requested a strong message be declared to the population.
As for the measures for events proposed by the Prefecture, opinions doubting their effectiveness abounded. One member of the group raised his opinion, “Health care is only inches away from a total breakdown. I’d like a 2 week complete shutdown of all events.”
A countermeasure proposal surged up that, in order to guarantee the health care provision system, a system should be established to give cooperation grants to pediatrics departments that stay open on Sundays and holidays. However, a doctor on the scene pointed out, “Actually, prefectural people only go to big hospitals, which are open 24 hours a day.” In order to reduce the burden on medical facilities devoted to Covid response, some requested that clinics be established for 24 hour response to those with light symptoms.
Governor Denny Tamaki was present at the meeting. He pointed out that the Prefecture is limited in its budget and jurisdiction. He further noted, “I think we have to do a reset on areas where our senses have become a bit paralyzed by Covid-19.”

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
