The Okinawa Prefectural Gubernatorial Election will be publicly announced on 25 August with ballots to be opened on 11 September. The Ryukyu Shimpo interviewed the three candidates in the race to hear about their enthusiasms and such: incumbent Governor Denny Tamaki (62), former Ginowan Mayor Atsushi Sakima (57), and former House of Representatives Member Mikio Shimoji (60).
Each of them held a different view on the construction of the new base at Henoko in Nago associated with the relocation of the US Military Futenma Airfield and such.
On Henoko, Governor Tamaki is, “Adamantly opposed.” He stated, on the scheduled landfill construction in the weak seabed, “It will take months and years longer than assumed and has no link to the reduction in the burden of the bases.”
Raising the issue of eliminating the dangers of Futenma, ex-Mayor Sakima stressed, on the relocation to Henoko, “As current policy, we have to approve of it.” He further requested that the Futenma return to Japanese control proceed.
Claiming that the landfill on the weak seabed is unnecessary, ex-Representative Shimoji suggested that training be transferred to Mageshima (Trans. note: an uninhabited island west of Tanegashima) in Kagoshima Prefecture, so “The dangers of Futenma can be eliminated.”
On economic promotion, Governor Tamaki stated, “We’re pursuing a set of policies for this new 21st century, with measures for disease prevention and economic revitalization.”
Ex-Mayor Sakima touted, “I’ll cooperate with the National Administration to procure an Okinawa related budget of 350 billion yen.”
Ex-Representative Shimoji offered various claims such as, “I’ll service our social infrastructure with increased investment to be used to invigorate the private sector and private finance initiatives (PFI).”

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
