The Okinawa Prefecture Gubernatorial Election will be publicized on 25 August and its ballots will be opened on 11 September. On 18 July, the Ryukyu Shimbun held its Political Party Roundtable at its main office at Izumizaki in Naha to gather opinions on the election from 8 representatives of the 7 political parties and groups, along with the Prefectural Assembly Unaffiliated Club faction, with seats in the Prefectural Assembly.

The Roundtable discussed each political group’s stance on the merits of the prefectural administration of incumbent Governor Denny Tamaki (62), who has made clear his intention of running for a second term, the contested points and significance of the gubernatorial election, and whether the planned construction of the new base at Henoko in Nago will become an important point in the contest.

Three candidates are expected to be in the race for the gubernatorial election: Governor Tamaki, who will run on halting the construction of the new base with the support of All Okinawa, Former Mayor of Ginowan Atsushi Sakima (57), nominated by the Liberal Democratic National Ruling Party (LDP), and Former House of Representatives Member Mikio Shimoji (60).

Tamki is supported by All Okinawa (composed of the Communist Party, Constitutional Democratic Party, Social Democratic Party, Social Masses Party, and Ninufwa Bushi /Ryukyuan: North Star/ Party), Sakima by the LDP, and Shimoji by the Unaffiliated Club. Komeito explained it would avoid a statement on the questions because “Komeito and LDP are basically in cooperation.”

On one hand, the force of All Okinawa will run on the value of working together with the administration of Governor Tamaki on halting the new base construction and advancing sustainable development goals (SDGs).

In contrast, LDP, Komeito, and the Unaffiliated Club will strongly criticize the Tamaki Administration for “a lack of power and decisiveness to get things done” in areas such as the response to Covid-19.

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
