Splendor of Okinawa: Duranta, along wall in Uruma, 15jy22

Recently, the relationship between politicians and the religious organization Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (formerly the Unity Church, a.k.a. Moonies) has become a political issue. As of 26 July, it has become clear that, even within Okinawa Prefecture, several politicians have participated in the church’s assemblies and such. Several Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) members of the National Diet, as well as its members of municipal assemblies, have participated in the church’s gatherings and such.

Moreover, former Ginowan Mayor Atsushi Sakima, running with support from the LDP in the Prefectural Gubernatorial Election with ballots to be opened on 11 September, has in the past attended gatherings and such of that church. Sources in Sakima’s campaign are claiming, “Sometime today, we want to explain formally in some form or other.”

At a scheduled press conference on 22 July, announced candidate for re-election, incumbent Governor Denny Tamaki stated, concerning his relationship with the church, “As far as I can recall, I’m not aware of any relationship whatsoever with any such a group.”

Former House of Representatives Member Mikio Shimoji stated simply in answering our coverage, “No connection!”

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
