There is only one month left before the 25 August public proclamation of the Okinawa Prefectural Gubernatorial Election, with ballots to be opened on 11 September.

On the 11 September ballot opening day, for the first time, the Prefectural Gubernatorial Election and the Unified Regional Election days will combine to overlap each other. It will be an unprecedented overlap of the gubernatorial election, representative elections in 24 municipalities, and mayoral elections in 4 municipalities, including Ginowan.

Covid-19 is breaking previous records daily in the number of new victims. While the announced candidates are concerned with policies to cope with its spread, they still have to carry on with digging up votes. Add to it all, they are being asked to come up with new electioneering skills, including aligning with the regional election campaigns.

Until 23 August, incumbent Governor Denny Tamaki (62), supported by All Okinawa, Former Ginowan Mayor Atsushi Sakima (57), and Former House of Representatives Member Mikio Shimoji (60) are all just expressing the intention of their candidacy.

Since the House of Councilors Election on 10 July, all three candidates ave been at fever pitch in putting their campaigns together. It has every aspect of becoming “a short, pitched, decisive battle.”

Tamaki and Sakima are each proceeding with arrangements to schedule the opening of their campaign office by the end of this month. Shimoji will hold a policy explanation meeting on 26 July, targeting his supporters on a video distribution site.

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
