On 20 July, the number of newly diagnosed Covid-19 patients surpassed the 5 thousand level. Okinawa Prefecture Governor Denny Tamaki expressed his recognition that some sort of limits on activity must be imposed. At a press conference in Okinawa City, he noted his concerns, “Without limits on activity, our health care will fall flat. I wonder if anxiety will explode among our prefecture’s population?” On the rise to the 5 thousand level, he stated, “It’s a situation that has to further our sense of crisis.”

At a Prevention Measures Headquarters meeting on 21 July, the governor revealed his intention to announce publicly a Prefectural countermeasure plan. However, as of the present stage, the National Government has held a negative view of activity restraints. So, the governor expressed his doubts, “There are considerable differences in contagion situations in each prefecture. Everywhere you look, that’s what’s being said, right?”

On activity restraints, the governor mentioned, “The Nation could more proactively use its regional revitalization temporary grants. If so, it would be possible to put at least a little firmer brake on the spread.” He lamented that with the Prefecture’s limited resources, it is restricted in giving assistance such as the compliance grants associated with activity restraints. The governor further expressed his consideration of requesting flexibility in budget use from the National Government.

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
