Splendor of Okinawa: Cape leadwort, on wall in Uruma, 23au22

Office terms are about up. On 25 August, the Prefectural Gubernatorial Election will be proclaimed, with the opening of ballots on 11 September.

3 contenders have publicly announced their candidacy. Incumbent Governor Denny Tamaki (62), has been nominated by the Communist Party, the Constitutional Democratic Party, the Social Democratic Party, Socialist Masses Party, Ninufa-bushi (North Star) Party, and Reiwa (Orderly Peace) Party. Former Ginowan Mayor Atsushi Sakima (58) was selected by the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Komeito. Former Diet Representative Mikio Shimoji (61) is an independent. Others also are making moves directed at entering the race. But it looks to be the start of a fierce election battle centered on the top 3, with the battle lines drawn along the US Military base issues and economic policies.

For the first time, 11 September will also be a day piled with the opening of ballots in unified local elections. 24 city, town, and village municipalities will hold elections for their assemblies. 4 municipalities will carry out their mayoral elections also on the same day. City Assembly resignations will also accompany the Naha Mayoral Election. So, we can expect a ballot opening the same day for a Prefectural Assembly by-election.

The prospective gubernatorial candidates are already working in coordination with each of these elections, and new election activities are being discussed. Since the finish of the July House of Councilors election, each prospective candidate has been at fever pitch preparing their stance toward the election.

Facing the greatest political decisions ever in the prefecture, every prospective candidate has been putting their efforts into activities such as stumping on street corners and holding mass rallies,

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
