All Okinawa has formally decided to put its force behind Takeharu Onaga (35) in the Naha Mayoral Election, and current Naha Mayor Mikiko Shiroma has been appointed chief of the committee to re-elect incumbent Governor Denny Tamaki who is seeking re-election as Okinawa Prefectural Governor.


At a press conference in Naha on 21 August, Mayor Shiroma stated, “Until the gubernatorial election is over (i.e. after the election), I’ll keep my distance. I’m not yet at the stage of deciding who to support.” Thus, she did not declare her support for a candidate


There are two candidates in the Naha Mayoral Election. One is Prefectural Assembly Representative Takeharu Onaga, second son of the late Governor Takeshi Onaga, the All Okinawa standard-bearer.


The other is Vice-mayor Satoru Chinen (58) who has served closely with Mayor Shiroma in such roles as secretary and office director. But the Liberal Democratic Party seems increasingly likely to decide on naming him as its candidate.


Although Mayor Shiroma had a deep relationship with the late Takeshi Onaga, she stated, “When I think of Takeshi, my thoughts are conflicted. I don’t want to use the word “dissent”, but it’s a choice.”

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

Splendor of Okinawa: Temple Tree, Mihama Beach, 1de25 CEO Takeshi Kato of Japan Entertainment (JE), which manages JUNGLIA Okinawa, visited Governor Denny Tamaki at the Prefectural Office on 28 November.  　 The CEO reported on the 4 months since the attraction’s opening. He repeatedly brought up dealing with operational improvements and such based on the voices of visitors to the park.  　 The CEO specifically mentioned the evening concerts in the park’s garden and, starting from December, the free entry of one child with each adult, targeting the prefecture’s people. CEO Kato stated, “We’d like to be contributing to Okinawa’s tourism as well.” Governor Tamaki, alluding to his speech the same day, entitled “Declaration on Sustainable Tourism”, stated, “For the people, employees, and tourists of our prefecture, this is an important win-win format. In the House of Councilors Election for the Okinawa Election District, independent candidate Sachika Takara (46), endorsed by All Okinawa, which opposes the relocation of the US Military Futenma Airfield in Ginowan to Henoko in Nago, both in Okinawa Prefecture, scored a victory.
