On 27 September, a State Funeral will be held for the late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. An invitation to attend was sent to the National Mayors Conference. Prefectural City Mayors Conference Chairman Okinawa City Mayor Sachio Kuwai and Prefectural Town and Village Conference Zamami Village Mayor Satoru Miyazato are scheduled to attend.
Mayor Kuwae explained, “The late Prime Minister Abe pushed to shorten the construction time of the second runway at Naha Airport. Moreover, he assured an Okinawa promotional budget in the range of 300 billion yen until 2021. He really put his heart into Okinawa’s development for us. Since we got an invitation, of course we will attend.”
Governor Denny Tamaki stated, regarding his attendance plans, “It’s up to the governors themselves.” Then he added, “There were some results in the work he put into Okinawan development, such as the improvement in the unemployment rate or the rate of job openings to applicants surpassing 1. I’m thankful for that much. But with my political stance, I couldn’t attend, could I?”
Mayor Mizato stated, “I will attend in my position as Town and Village Conference Chair. There are various opinions on the State Funeral. However, it was a Cabinet decision. While Abe was prime minister, he was someone who contributed to the promotion of Okinawa and its outlying islands. So, I want to show my respect by attending.
Regarding his absence, Governor Tamaki stated further, “I can’t be obliged to show honor in attending his State Funeral even after issues such as his policies on the bases and Okinawa’s development, can I?

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
