After yesterday’s 3,000 strong parade, the venue of today’s opening ceremony for the World-wide Uchinada-nchu Festival may be changed due to rain. (31oc22).

The 7th World-wide Uchina-nchu (Ryukuan: Okinawan) Festival Eve Parade (sponsored by a committee of the same name) was held on Kokusai Dori (International Street) in Naha on 30 October. 1600 visitors from 13 countries and 26 capitals participated in it. Including groups from within the prefecture and organizations from other parts of Japan, about 3,000 paraded in a display of music and dance from each of their countries and regions.


The day was designated World-wide Uchina-nchu Day 6 years ago at the last such festival. The route was overflowing with people from the prefecture and tourists. The participation of all in the parade together attests the strength of Okinawan bonds.


At the ceremony prior to the parade, designated Event Chairman Governor Denny Tamaki had words of thanks and greeting for the participants from abroad. Then he urged the people of the prefecture, “Let’s welcome all with our warmth,” and added in the Ryukuan language, “Machyo-tan do- (We’ve awaited this moment) chimu gukuru (in our heart of hearts).”


Mixing the languages of Okinawa and Hawaii, Hawaii’s Governor David Ige greeted the crowd with, “Haisai, gusu-yo-! (Hello, Everybody), Aloha!” He continued, “The memories made on Kokusai Street are memories that can’t be bought!”


31 October will see the formal opening ceremony of the festival. However, there is a fear of an alert-class huge rainstorm. So, the event committee is considering a change in site from Okinawa Cellular Stadium in Naha to Okinawa Cellular Park’s indoor athletic field.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

Governor Denny receives the report on JUNGLIA at the 4 month mark after its opening. (7de25)

Splendor of Okinawa: Temple Tree, Mihama Beach, 1de25 CEO Takeshi Kato of Japan Entertainment (JE), which manages JUNGLIA Okinawa, visited Governor Denny Tamaki at the Prefectural Office on 28 November.  　 The CEO reported on the 4 months since the attraction’s opening. He repeatedly brought up dealing with operational improvements and such based on the voices of visitors to the park.  　 The CEO specifically mentioned the evening concerts in the park’s garden and, starting from December, the free entry of one child with each adult, targeting the prefecture’s people. CEO Kato stated, “We’d like to be contributing to Okinawa’s tourism as well.” Governor Tamaki, alluding to his speech the same day, entitled “Declaration on Sustainable Tourism”, stated, “For the people, employees, and tourists of our prefecture, this is an important win-win format. In the House of Councilors Election for the Okinawa Election District, independent candidate Sachika Takara (46), endorsed by All Okinawa, which opposes the relocation of the US Military Futenma Airfield in Ginowan to Henoko in Nago, both in Okinawa Prefecture, scored a victory.
