The Emperor and Empress will together visit Okinawa for a scheduled one night and two days starting on 22 October. It will be the first visit for both of them since taking the throne. During their visit, as one of 4 imperial events, they will attend the national people’s cultural festival, “The Chura Shima (Ryukuan: Beautiful Island) Okinawa Cultural Festival 2022.” Moreover, Governor Denny Tamaki is scheduled to hold discussions with them.

This will be the 6th visit for the Emperor, if the time prior to taking the throne is included, the most recent being for their attendance at  the 2010 All Okinawa Chura Shima  Festival. For the Empress, it will be her second visit since her attendance at the 1997 National Agricultural Youth Interchange Rally.

In the back and forth of the relationship between the Royal Family and Okinawa,  emperors have had a deep involvement in the circumstances of Okinawa’s fate. Under the Emperor Showa, Okinawa was consumed in a tragic land battle, where 1 in 4 of its inhabitants fell victim to war. Voices still call for accountability for the Battle of Okinawa 77 years ago.

According to the Prefecture and others, on this visit, the Emperor is also scheduled to offer “words” at the formal opening of the festival. This emperor is the third generation following Emperors Showa and Heisei involved in Okinawa. (Translator’s note: Okinawa has been a formal possession of Japan since Meiji and under its control since Tokugawa.) This being the Emperor’s first visit to Okinawa since ascending the throne, all eyes will be on him and how his address is worded.

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
