With the ballot opening for the Naha Mayoral Election on 23 October, from the 20th, the campaigns have rushed into the final 3-day endgame election battle. Both candidates are running as independents in the election. But actually, former Prefectural Assembly Member Takeharu Onaga (35) is endorsed by the Communist Party, the Constitutional Democratic Party, the Social Democratic Party, the Social Masses Party, Reiwa, and Ninufa Bushi (North Star). Likewise, former Naha Vice-mayor Satoru Chinen (59) is endorsed by the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Komeito. Since the proclamation of the election on 16 October, both of them have been scurrying about to gather support. On 19 October as well, they were on street corners drumming up support.
Right from the proclamation, the Onaga campaign started giving campaign speeches, with Governor Denny Tamaki seemingly daily along for support. With the highly popular governor standing with him on street corners, Candidate Onaga has been crafting his appeal to independent voters. On 19 October, he pledged in a speech at the Prefectural People’s Plaza, “We will make a city that’s number one in Japan in childhood education!”
In order to raise name recognition, the Chinen camp is using Candidate Chinen’s position as heir to Naha Mayor Mikiko Shiroma for its appeal. The mayor has been making the rounds with Chinen making speeches and On 19 October, Candidate Chinen gave a speech at Kumoji Intersection, pledging, “I’ll make my immediate priority dealing with administrative policy. I’ll open Naha Military Port to the public and save its assets for the future.”
During the first 3 days of early voting, between 17 and 19 October, 21,625 voters cast their ballots: 21,625 male and 12,137 female.

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
