The Air Self-Defense Force (SDF) aerobatic flight team Blue Angels are scheduled for an exhibition flight at Miyakojima City on 11 December. However, the scheduled Shimojishima Airport will not be used. Instead, as was learned through reporting from informed sources on 29 November, the Prefecture and the SDF are pushing arrangements for the use of Miyakojima Airport.


A source connected to Miyakojima Airport  stated, “As long as there is no disruption to civilian flights, there’s no choice but to accept the use as reported.” The use of Miyakojima Airport is being considered as the axis for the event.


Citizens groups and others have raised their voices in the concern that this will only lead to even further use of civilian airports by the SDF. Moreover, they claim that a great many airlines fly into Miyakojima Airport, and its narrow parking facilities are problematic.　


It seems those dealing with the pros and cons of the route adjustment are in a jam. As for Shimojishima Airport, the Yara Doctrine negotiated that its non-civilian use is unacceptable. So, Governor Denny Tamaki has also expressed disapproval of its use. If weather conditions render Miyakojima Airport unusable, Naha SDF Base remains possible for take-offs and landings.


The flight exhibition is part of the opening of the 50th anniversary activities to celebrate the establishment of a radar station at the Air SDF Miyakojima Branch Base. The Air SDF plans to put on its airshow in the area over the Turiba- District of Taira in Miyakojima City.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

Governor Denny receives the report on JUNGLIA at the 4 month mark after its opening. (7de25)

Splendor of Okinawa: Temple Tree, Mihama Beach, 1de25 CEO Takeshi Kato of Japan Entertainment (JE), which manages JUNGLIA Okinawa, visited Governor Denny Tamaki at the Prefectural Office on 28 November.  　 The CEO reported on the 4 months since the attraction’s opening. He repeatedly brought up dealing with operational improvements and such based on the voices of visitors to the park.  　 The CEO specifically mentioned the evening concerts in the park’s garden and, starting from December, the free entry of one child with each adult, targeting the prefecture’s people. CEO Kato stated, “We’d like to be contributing to Okinawa’s tourism as well.” Governor Tamaki, alluding to his speech the same day, entitled “Declaration on Sustainable Tourism”, stated, “For the people, employees, and tourists of our prefecture, this is an important win-win format.
