Governor Denny Tamaki held talks on 2 December with Taipei’s Mayor Ko Wen-je during his visit to the prefecture. The governor alluded to the history of exchanges between Okinawa and Taiwan. He expressed his desire for an acceleration of exchanges, “I would like us to do our best to overcome whatever future hurdles in order to make exchanges possible.


Mayor Ko responded that a great many tourists from Taiwan are visiting Okinawa and urged, “We’d like a great many visitors to come to Taiwan as well.” 


The governor referred to reopening flights between Naha, on hold due to Covid-19. He added his welcome, “We would be delighted to have a great many people from Taiwan come to visit Okinawa. We want to welcome you with our contagion countermeasures set in place.

　

After the meeting, Mayor Ko responded to questions from the press. As to the concerns Governor Tamaki has expressed over  Taiwan’s troubles, he noted, “I’m not about to interfere in the statements of politicians from other countries.”  Then he added, “Our stand on the hope for peace is common to us both.”


Taiwan’s presidential election will be held in January 2024. So the Taiwan media was paying close attention to whether Mayor Ko’s statements would show his stance on running as a candidate for the Taiwan People’s Party, which he himself founded. Taiwan reporters accompanying him even asked whether he intended to stand as a candidate in the presidential election. But he avoided any such statement. 


Mayor Ko was in the prefecture from 1-3 November to promote Taiwan’s transit IC card called Yuyu.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

Governor Denny receives the report on JUNGLIA at the 4 month mark after its opening. (7de25)

Splendor of Okinawa: Temple Tree, Mihama Beach, 1de25 CEO Takeshi Kato of Japan Entertainment (JE), which manages JUNGLIA Okinawa, visited Governor Denny Tamaki at the Prefectural Office on 28 November.  　 The CEO reported on the 4 months since the attraction’s opening. He repeatedly brought up dealing with operational improvements and such based on the voices of visitors to the park.  　 The CEO specifically mentioned the evening concerts in the park’s garden and, starting from December, the free entry of one child with each adult, targeting the prefecture’s people. CEO Kato stated, “We’d like to be contributing to Okinawa’s tourism as well.” Governor Tamaki, alluding to his speech the same day, entitled “Declaration on Sustainable Tourism”, stated, “For the people, employees, and tourists of our prefecture, this is an important win-win format. In the House of Councilors Election for the Okinawa Election District, independent candidate Sachika Takara (46), endorsed by All Okinawa, which opposes the relocation of the US Military Futenma Airfield in Ginowan to Henoko in Nago, both in Okinawa Prefecture, scored a victory. She defeated the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Party’s new candidate Ryo Okuma (38) in the election campaign.  Candidate Takara pledged before her supporters, “The Henoko problem is something our prefecture’s people have taken into our hearts.
