The Ground Self~Defense Force (GSDF) 15th Brigade Command Headquarters, located in Naha, is considering broadening its scope. On the morning of 5 December, Governor Denny Tamaki noted that, right while Okinawa has the excessive burden of US Military bases, the SDF is thinking of reinforcing their own. If so, he claims, “The excessive weight of our burden will become even heavier!” He expressed his concerns that the burden of the bases in Okinawa will increase.


On the topic of the concrete  contents of the brigade reinforcement, the governor stopped at saying only, “Information gathering by our office is ongoing, and I’d like to get further reports.” Then the governor added, “If the SDF is building up its structure for so-called defense capability, the burden of the weight of US Forces ought to be comparatively decreased by the same amount.” He once again pled for a reduction in the burden of bases in Okinawa.


The National Government’s reinforcement of defense capability in the Southwest Island Chain is a case in point. The one infantry regiment of the 15th Brigade now stationed there will be increased to 2 regiments. Moreover, there is a plan to promote the rank of its commander from lieutenant general up to general.


The build up in strength of the 15th Brigade is expected within this year with the revision of joint security article 3 of the National Defense Strategy.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

Governor Denny receives the report on JUNGLIA at the 4 month mark after its opening. (7de25)

Splendor of Okinawa: Temple Tree, Mihama Beach, 1de25 CEO Takeshi Kato of Japan Entertainment (JE), which manages JUNGLIA Okinawa, visited Governor Denny Tamaki at the Prefectural Office on 28 November.  　 The CEO reported on the 4 months since the attraction’s opening. He repeatedly brought up dealing with operational improvements and such based on the voices of visitors to the park.  　 The CEO specifically mentioned the evening concerts in the park’s garden and, starting from December, the free entry of one child with each adult, targeting the prefecture’s people. CEO Kato stated, “We’d like to be contributing to Okinawa’s tourism as well.” Governor Tamaki, alluding to his speech the same day, entitled “Declaration on Sustainable Tourism”, stated, “For the people, employees, and tourists of our prefecture, this is an important win-win format.
