On hearing of a GSDF build-up, Governor Denny Tamaki quips, “If they’re increasing the strength of the Self Defense Forces, they ought to be decreasing our burden of US Military bases.” (7de22)

Okinawa Prefecture Governor Denny Tamaki responded to queries from the press at the Prefectural Office on 5 December.

The Japanese Government is planning to reinforce elements of the 15th Ground Self-Defense Brigade (GSDF) stationed in Naha. In response to the news, the governor quipped, “If true, our US military burden ought to be reduced.” He then pointed out, “If, on top of the excessive burden of the US Military, they’re increasing the capabilities of the SDF, that’s just adding to our already excessive burden!” He emphasized, “If, under the guise of so-called defensive capability, they build up their structure, naturally, the comparative weight of our burden of the US Military ought to be lessened by the same factor.”

The Defense Ministry, which is in charge of the 15th Brigade build-up, is reinforcing the brigade’s important infantry element from the present one regiment to two. It has been learned that the reinforcement  of its other elements is also being eyed. Moreover, there is also a plan to reinforce the ballistic missile interception network to center on the Southwest Island Chain.

The Prefecture is confirming the veracity of these reports of further build-ups with the Defense Ministry side.

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.

Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.

  1. This blog hopes to  translate one news article a day on the governor.  It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.

  2. Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.

  3. Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names  whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
