On his overseas official trip, Governor Denny Tamaki visited the US territory of Guam on 18 January. There he conferred with Colonel Christopher L. Bopp, the commander of the new Camp Blaz, still under construction for the relocation of 4,000 US Marines from Okinawa.
According to the Prefecture, during the discussions, Colonel Bopp explained about the relocation of Marines and such, noting, “We’re planning on beginning reception of the troops from 2024, even if only on a small scale.” The colonel showed he fully understood the possible reception of troops was in line with US-Japan agreements.
Again, according to the Prefecture, Colonel Bopp explained fully the situation along with an overview of the base and the progress of its development. As for the total work on Camp Blaz, 45% is currently under construction, 19% is already finished, and 36% is still untouched, according to the colonel’s explanation.
In response, Governor Tamaki noted, “I’m also greatly concerned about the effects of the relocation on the livelihoods of base workers.” He further requested that he receive information as quickly as possible on the specific units and such to be relocated. The governor was also shown barracks, the fire station, and other facilities within the base.
On the same day, Governor Tamaki also exchanged views with Rear Admiral Benjamin Nicholson, Commander Joint Region Marianas. During their discussions,Governor Tamaki explained how 70.3% of facilities set aside especially for US Forces in Japan are centralized in Okinawa. The governor also touched on the US Government plan to reorganize the US Marine units in Okinawa into an MLR (Marine Littoral Regiment). He requested that the plan have no bearing on the relocation of US Marines to Guam.
Rear Admiral Nicholson made such comments as, “Through communication in our close contacts with Guam’s government and its people, we have built an extremely friendly relationship. Maintaining it going forward is essential to us all.”

Denny in the News: news about Governor Denny Tamaki.
Denny Tamaki is the governor of Okinawa Prefecture in Japan. Although Okinawa is important as an international tourist destination and a key element in strategic US Military Forces, its governor receives very little coverage in the Japanese press and almost none in the English language media.
This blog hopes to translate one news article a day on the governor. It is unsponsored and unauthorized. The translator simply hopes to improve his skills and perhaps give the governor an English speaking audience.
Any suggestion on improving the translation will be gratefully accepted. However, please leave political comments for another forum.
Where they occur, words and phrases in Ryukyuan (the Okinawan language) are rendered in italics and translated in parentheses. Names whose readings are uncertain are rendered as Name (=Kanji?) as in Nagayuki (=長行?). Any corrections in such instances would be gratefully appreciated.
